British Tourism to Lanzarote Up 6%
Give up holidays abroad? Not likely. That seems to be the message conveyed by many British consumers. As Spanish airport operators AENA have just released new figures revealing that British tourist numbers to Lanzarote have actually increased this year. With a total of 708,506 visitors from the UK arriving on flights to the island during the first ten months of 2008. News that makes happy reading for owners of apartments and holiday villas in Lanzarote.
Lanzarote has long been a hot favourite with British tourists and property investors. Thanks to a great year round climate, wonderful beaches and unique attractions, such as the Timanfaya Volcano Park. So much so that the UK is now firmly established as the number one market for tourism to the Island of Fire. With British guests accounting for well over 50% of all visits made by foreign nationals.
And despite the current economic climate British tourism has in fact increased by 6% for the year to date versus 2007 figures. Whilst overall Lanzarote has attracted a total of 1,341,556 foreign visitors until October end this year. A figure that is also up on 2007 – albeit only marginally by 1.1%.
It´s not just the British who are refusing to surrender their place in the sun either. As Irish visitor numbers have also increased across the same period. With 186,759 tourists from Eire visiting Lanzarote in the first ten months of this year. A figure Up by 1.39 % - so further cementing Lanzarote´s position as the most popular destination in the whole of Spain with Irish tourists.
Increases have also been recorded in a number of other markets, such as Scandinavia. Once a major source of visitors for the island when tourism first started taking off back in the 1970s and 80´s and now enjoying something of a renaissance. With AENA´s figures showing Swedish visitor numbers up by 35.07% year on year, followed by Norway (up 19.6%) and Finland (up 14.33%).
The only dark cloud in this otherwise sunny picture comes from the German market. Still Lanzarote´s second largest - but which has been in long term decline for some time as German tourists opt for other, newer destinations. With AENA´s figures showing a large fall of 13.23% to 226,088 visits. A situation island authorises are currently seeking to redress with a multi million euro marketing campaign targeting these missing German guests.
